Portugal’s cultural institutions are keeping up with the strong growth of Chinese tourists to the western European country. São Jorge Castle, an archaeological site and hilltop museum overlooking Lisbon, has created a Chinese-language brochure that visitors receive upon admission.

São Jorge Castle is a popular site for its spectacular views across the capital city’s red rooftops and Tagus river. The Tower of Ulysses, with its camera obscura displaying a 360-degree projection of Lisbon through a system of lenses and mirrors, is one of the site’s main attractions.

The number of Chinese tourists to Portugal reached 260,000 in 2018, a year-on-year increase of more than 40 percent, according Portugal’s Bureau of Tourism. The launch of direct flights between China and Portugal has been cited as an important factor in the development.
